Comprehensive Center for Women’s Medicine practices Integrative Medicine (IM), also know as complementary medicine or alternative medicine which treats the mind, body and spirit. We believe in treating the patient, not just the disease. Integrative Medicine emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapies.
What is Integrative Medicine?
The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine defines integrative medicine as “the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing”.
Integrative Medicine Therapies
Integrative medicine is to use therapies that have some high-quality evidence to support them.
Natural Supplements – herbs (also known as botanicals), vitamins and minerals, and probiotics.
Relaxation Techniques – breathing exercises, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation.
Tai chi and Gi gong – practices from traditional Chinese medicine that combine specific movements, coordinated breathing, and mental focus.
Yoga – typically combine physical postures or movement, breathing techniques, and meditation.
Lifestyle Medicine (LM) is the use of lifestyle interventions in the treatment and management of disease such as diet, stress management, nutrition and a variety of other non-drug modalities. A growing body of scientific evidence has demonstrated that lifestyle intervention is an essential component in the treatment of chronic disease that can be as effective as medication, but without the risks and unwanted side-effects.
